Chapter Thirty

I walked through the bathroom into Momma’s room and noticed that someone, I’d assume Van, had picked all of Momma’s things up and tidied her room too. That was thoughtful. And if he could ever face me again, I’d have to thank him.

Since I didn’t have any other reason to stay upstairs, I climbed downstairs and went back into the parlor where the women of the coven were still convened. “I’m sorry,” I apologized. “I think I was a bit overset.”

Bea stood up and hurried over to me, taking my long, narrow hands into her soft, plump ones, and patting them gently. “Bless your heart, don’t you go apologizing to us,” she fussed. “I’m sure you’re worn slap out. You just sit yourself down, nibble on your food some, and get cozy.”

She glanced around the room as she led me back to my chair. “Vandergast. Vandergast,” she called. “Would you be a honey and bring me that throw, so I can wrap it around Louella Jo?”

It had to be ninety degrees in the shade.

“No, really, I don’t…” I began.

“Nonsense,” she interrupted. “A wrap around your shoulders will do you good whilst you get something in your stomach.”

I sat down and picked up my plate, wondering what in the world I would be able to keep down. There was an assortment of salads that now looked a little dry and hard. The little ham sandwich looked wilted. And the cheese slices were curled up at the ends.

Bea looked down at my plate and shook her head. “Well, you can’t eat that,” she asserted. “You just sit here, and I’ll be back in a flash.”

Relieved, I leaned back in the chair and took a deep breath, ready to face the rest of the ladies in the room. Suddenly a set of strong hands were on my shoulders and I could feel warm breath against my neck. “Here’s the throw,” Van said, tucking it around my shoulders. “You need anything else?”

I turned and suddenly we were almost nose to nose.

Did you ever read that comic book about those four superheroes and one of them would suddenly flame on and his whole body would become a human torch? Well, I can tell you exactly how that man feels.

“I’m fine, thank you,” I croaked.

I’ve noticed that my intonation becomes remarkably unattractive when I’m dealing with the opposite sex.

“Do you need something to drink?” he asked with concern.

Yes, arsenic, please, I thought.

“I believe I have a glass of tea nearby,” I said out loud.

“There it is,” he said. reaching over me and inadvertently pressing himself against my back to pick up the glass on the small pie crust table next to me. My temperature soared into the low two hundreds. Then he retrieved the glass and handed it to me. I was grateful my sweaty hands could still maintain a firm grasp on the glass. But, just to be sure, I held it in both hands.

“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice a little shaky.

“My pleasure,” he replied before he nodded kindly and left the room.
